Pattern in english
BobseyTwin have been so nice and translated to english. Thank you :)
I used an online translater to figure out MaritaB’s awesome pattern - hope that’s ok.
It’s a roungh translation, but I think it makes sense :)
I can’t wait to try and see how it works up!
Cast on 96 stitches using light gray yarn on 3.5 mm needles. Place maker and join to knit in the round. Knit 1x1 rib for 10 rounds.
Switch to 4 mm needles. (The rest of the hat is worked in stockinette stitch.)
Work 7 rounds using light gray yarn.
Knit 12 rounds using dark gray yarn.
Knit the next 2 rounds as follows:
Knit 10 stitches in light gray, then two stitches in dark gray (this is the middle stripe in the road) all the way around.
Next, using the dark gray yarn only, knit 11 rounds, and decrease one stitch at the end of the 11th round (= 95 stitches).
Returning to the light gray yarn, begin the decreases;
Place a stitch marker at every 19th stitch (19, 38, 57, 76 and 95). You should decrease 1 stitch on each side of the markers every other round (i.e.: you are decreasing 10 stitches every other round).
When you have only 19 stitches remaining, decrease by K2tog twice (15 sts). Pull yarn through the remaining stitches.
The pattern for the crocheted cars was found here (and MaritaB used a 4mm crochet hook) (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/socks-with-cars)&... a few small buttons and sewed them on as wheels.

My own note:
I have no clue how to crotchet, but I would think the referenced car pattern could be easily adapted into a knit pattern. I imagine something like this:
Cast on 8.
1st row: Knit, increase 1 st at each end (10st)
2nd row: Purl 10
3rd row: Knit 10
4th row: Cast off 2 st on each end (6 st remain)
5th row: Knit 6
6th row: don’t knit, just cast on 8 or so stitches using your preferred method to make the “top” of the car, and sew it to the opposite side, creating the car’s window and roof.
We should all play with this to see if it works!
